About HBCU Prep

Jacorey Harrell leads HBCU Prep to its first tournament title, while senior guard Kyron Williams sets the tone as the team’s floor general.

HOUSTON, TEXAS — November 1, 2024 — HBCU Prep made a powerful statement in its first tournament appearance, going undefeated and capturing the program’s first championship at the Alodia Tournament.

The championship marks a major milestone for HBCU Prep, a program built to provide student-athletes with elite development, exposure, game film, leadership, and future college opportunities, especially for athletes interested in Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

In its first opportunity to compete in tournament play, HBCU Prep showed toughness, discipline, teamwork, and confidence from start to finish. The team completed the tournament undefeated and walked away with its first championship trophy, establishing itself as a program to watch in the Houston basketball community.

Leading the way was standout guard Jacorey Harrell, who delivered a strong performance throughout the tournament. Harrell scored 24 points in tournament play and elevated his game even more in the championship, finishing with 27 points to help guide HBCU Prep to the title.

Harrell’s scoring, composure, and ability to make big plays were key factors in HBCU Prep’s undefeated run.

HBCU Prep Makes History in First Tournament Appearance

Winning a championship in the first tournament is never easy, especially for a new program still building chemistry, identity, and culture. However, HBCU Prep showed early signs of what the program is designed to become.

The team played with energy, effort, and purpose throughout the tournament. Players bought into their roles, defended at a high level, moved the basketball, and competed with confidence in pressure moments.

The championship showed that HBCU Prep is not just focused on participation. The program is focused on development, exposure, preparation, and winning the right way.

This tournament championship represents the first step in building a competitive foundation for HBCU Prep basketball.

Jacorey Harrell Leads the Way

Jacorey Harrell was one of the biggest difference-makers for HBCU Prep during the tournament.

After scoring 24 points earlier in the tournament, Harrell delivered when it mattered most, scoring 27 points in the championship game. His offensive production helped give HBCU Prep the scoring boost it needed to finish the tournament undefeated.

Harrell displayed the ability to score in multiple ways, attack the defense, create momentum, and step up in a championship environment.

His performance helped set the tone for the program’s first tournament championship and showed why he is one of the key players in HBCU Prep’s early success.

Kyron Williams Leads as Floor General

While Harrell led the team in scoring, senior guard Kyron Williams played a major role in organizing the offense and leading the team as the primary playmaker.

Williams led HBCU Prep in assists during the tournament and helped control the pace of the game. His ability to get teammates involved, make the right decisions, and lead on the court was a major part of the team’s undefeated championship run.

After the championship, Williams spoke about what the win meant to the team.

“This championship means a lot because it shows what we can become when we play together,” said Kyron Williams. “We came into this tournament ready to prove ourselves, and everybody stepped up. My job was to lead, keep everybody involved, and make sure we stayed focused. Winning our first tournament undefeated gives us confidence, but we know this is only the beginning.”

Williams also credited the team’s chemistry and coaching staff.

“Coach Kevin pushed us to play hard, trust each other, and represent the program the right way,” Williams added. “We wanted to make history for HBCU Prep, and that’s what we did.”

Statement from Head Coach Kevin Williams Sr.

Head Coach Kevin Williams Sr. praised the team for its effort, discipline, and ability to compete under pressure in the program’s first tournament appearance.

“I am extremely proud of this group,” said Head Coach Kevin Williams Sr. “To come into our first tournament as a program, go undefeated, and win the championship says a lot about the character of these young men. They played together, they listened, they competed, and they believed in what we are building.”

Williams said the championship is an important moment for the program, but also only the beginning.

“This is a great first step for HBCU Prep,” Williams continued. “We are building a program that is about development, exposure, discipline, education, and opportunity. Winning the Alodia Tournament shows that our athletes can compete, but more importantly, it shows that they are buying into the culture. We want to prepare these young men for the next level, and performances like this help build confidence and momentum.”

Williams also highlighted Harrell and Kyron Williams for their leadership.

“Jacorey Harrell was outstanding,” Williams said. “He gave us big-time scoring and showed he can perform in important moments. Kyron Williams did a great job leading the team, controlling the game, and getting his teammates involved. Those are the kinds of performances you need to win championships.”

A Championship Built on Team Effort

Although Harrell and Williams helped lead the way, HBCU Prep’s championship run was the result of a complete team effort.

The team defended, communicated, shared the ball, and showed maturity throughout the tournament. Every player contributed to the undefeated run, whether through scoring, rebounding, defense, energy, or leadership.

The championship gave HBCU Prep an early identity as a program built on toughness, teamwork, and opportunity.

For a first tournament appearance, the result could not have been stronger.

Building the HBCU Prep Standard

HBCU Prep was created to give student-athletes a serious development platform with a focus on basketball, academics, exposure, and future opportunities.

The program is designed for players who want to grow, compete, and position themselves for college basketball opportunities. HBCU Prep also places a special emphasis on connecting athletes to the culture and opportunities of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The Alodia Tournament championship gives the program a major building block as it continues to grow.
