HBCU Prep Houston Varsity captures second championship in team history behind leading scorer Chris Fultz Jr. and leading assist man Kyron Williams.
HOUSTON, TEXAS — August 22, 2024 — HBCU Legacy, the HBCU Prep Houston Varsity basketball program, has captured the Banff Varsity Summer League Championship after completing an undefeated summer league run.
The Prep Varsity team went undefeated throughout the Banff Varsity Summer League, winning games with discipline, balance, defensive pressure, and strong team execution. Behind the play of leading scorer Chris Fultz Jr. and leading assist man Kyron Williams, HBCU Legacy established itself as one of the top varsity programs in the Houston area.
The championship marks the second championship in team history for HBCU Prep Houston Varsity and continues the program’s early success as it builds a reputation for player development, competitive excellence, and next-level preparation.
HBCU Legacy Completes Undefeated Summer League Season
HBCU Legacy entered the Banff Varsity Summer League focused on growth, chemistry, and competition. By the end of the season, the team had done more than improve. It had made a statement.
The Prep Varsity team finished the league undefeated and won by an average of 25 points per game, showing dominance on both ends of the court.
From the opening games through the championship run, HBCU Legacy played with confidence and purpose. The team pushed the tempo, shared the basketball, defended with energy, and responded to every challenge placed in front of them.
The undefeated record was not just a reflection of talent. It was a reflection of preparation, commitment, and buy-in from the entire roster.
Chris Fultz Jr. Leads the Scoring Attack
A major part of HBCU Legacy’s championship success was the play of leading scorer Chris Fultz Jr.
Fultz provided consistent offensive production throughout the summer league. His ability to score, attack the defense, create momentum, and deliver in key moments helped set the tone for the Prep Varsity offense.
As the team’s leading scorer, Fultz became one of the primary offensive weapons during the undefeated run. His performance helped HBCU Legacy build early leads, maintain control, and close games with confidence.
His scoring presence gave the Prep a reliable option and helped open opportunities for teammates throughout the summer league.
Kyron Williams Controls the Offense
While Fultz led the team in scoring, Kyron Williams helped drive the team’s offensive rhythm as the leading assist man.
Williams played the role of floor general throughout the Banff Varsity Summer League, creating opportunities for teammates, controlling pace, and helping HBCU Legacy play organized basketball.
His ability to distribute the ball, lead the team, make decisions under pressure, and keep everyone involved was one of the keys to the Prep’s undefeated season.
Williams’ leadership gave HBCU Legacy stability and confidence. His playmaking helped the team become more balanced, more efficient, and harder to defend.
Championship Built on Balance and Team Effort
Although Chris Fultz Jr. and Kyron Williams played major roles, the Banff Varsity Summer League championship was a complete team accomplishment.
HBCU Legacy’s success came from every player understanding their role and contributing to the team’s standard. The Prep played with strong defensive effort, unselfish offense, rebounding, communication, and intensity.
Winning by an average of 25 points showed the team’s ability to control games and maintain focus. Even with large leads, HBCU Legacy continued to play with purpose and discipline.
The team’s performance throughout the summer league reflected the values of HBCU Prep Houston: development, accountability, exposure, teamwork, and preparation for the next level.
Statement from Head Coach Kevin Williams Sr.
Head Coach Kevin Williams Sr. praised the team for its undefeated championship run and the continued growth of the HBCU Prep Houston Varsity program.
“I am extremely proud of this group and the way they represented HBCU Prep Houston,” said Head Coach Kevin Williams Sr. “To go undefeated in the Banff Varsity Summer League and win by an average of 25 points shows that our players are buying into the program. They came to work, they competed, they trusted each other, and they played the game the right way.”
Williams said the championship is another important step for the program.
“This is our second championship in team history, and that means a lot because we are still building,” Williams continued. “Every tournament, every league, and every game is part of the process. We want our players to develop, gain confidence, get exposure, and learn how to win with discipline. This championship shows that the program is moving in the right direction.”
Williams also highlighted the impact of Fultz and Williams.
“Chris Fultz Jr. gave us consistent scoring and was a major part of our offensive success,” Williams said. “Kyron Williams did a great job leading the team in assists, controlling the pace, and getting his teammates involved. When your leading scorer and your leading assist man are both playing at a high level, it gives the entire team confidence.”
Williams added that the undefeated season was about more than individual performances.
“This was a team championship,” Williams said. “We had players defend, rebound, communicate, make extra passes, and accept their roles. That is how you build a winning culture. We are proud of the championship, but we are even more proud of the growth.”
